Abstracts

Two hundred years ago, in 1812, the first volume of the Children’s and Household Tales Collected by the Brothers Grimm was published, followed, in 1815, by the second one. Since then, the work has been constantly reedited and translated, already during the Grimms’ lifetime. The authors themselves did numerous changes from one edition to the next, and their work was frequently amplified, finally by the third volume, containing notes, testimonies and a section on “Literature”. The importance of this paratextual apparatus for fairy tale research is unvaluable. The purpose of this contribution is to make a part of these paratexts: the “Testimonies” (Zeugnisse) and the section on “Literature” (Literatur) more accessible.
The first part focuses on the “Testimonies”. It examines their position inside the work and their chronological presentation. Particular attention is paid to the selection of linguistic and cultural spheres the Grimms made as well as to the choice they made of foreign vocabulary to give equivalents to their Märchen concept. Besides, the staging the Grimms constructed for the narration of tales is discussed. This article also deals with their way of quoting and handling the sources of the “Testimonies”. The study shows how the Grimms used and functionalized the “Testimonies” in order to legitimise the “scenography” and the project of the Kinder- und Hausmärchen gesammelt durch die Brüder Grimm.
The second part of this article proposes a previously unpublished translation into French of the beginning of the paratextual section on “Literature”. There, the Grimms dealt with collections of Italian tales (Straparola, Basile), the Gesta Romanorumand Spain, as well as with French authors of tales, such as Perrault and Madame d’Aulnoy. Thus, this section presents a particular interest for studies on european literatures and cultures.
